Watch this incredible video of an American combat ship being dropped into the ocean on it`s launch day. Can you imagine being on board during the launch?
This combat ship is the USS Detroit and was built by Lockheed Martin-led. It is the sixth vessel to be named after the city of Detroit and is a Freedom class littoral combat ship.
When carrying a full load it weighs 2.862 tons. It has two Rolls-Royce MT30 36 MW gas turbines, two Colt-Pielstick diesel engines and four Rolls-Royce waterjets that helps this ship reach a top speed of 45 knots (52 mph; 83 km/h).
The USS Detroit is capable of remaining at sea for 21 days before needing resupplies.
Even though this combat ship looks small it can still carry small aircraft. Two MH-60R/S Seahawks and a MQ-8 Fire Scout are stored in the belly of this beast.
The littoral combat ships are designed to scout and defend the shores. They are agile, stealthy and powerful enough to hold off attacks.
They are equipped with a flight deck, a hangar, a stern ramp for operating small boats, and the cargo space to transport a small assault force.
Standard armaments include Mk 110 57 mm guns and RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missiles. These ships also feature autonomous air, surface, and underwater vehicles.
The first littoral combat ship was built in 2008 and was called the USS Freedom.
The idea behind the littoral combat ship was to create a small, quick, highly maneuverable vessel that is cheap to build. When necessary it can be configured to be used for anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and many more special missions.
